Me and my game design buddie (wop woop shayla!) decided to pick up this game for inspiration for the hit Indie game Idol Showdown. Dice thrown has a fantastic system that lets its players start playing relatively quickly. With a majority of the more complicated mechanics being on the game board itself the game lends itself to being picked up and played straight away.
Dice Throne is split into 8 phases. Upkeep Phase, Income Phase, Main Phase (1), Offensive Roll Phase, Targeting Roll Phase, Defensive roll Phase, Main Phase (2), and the Discard Phase. These distinct turn phases allow for a turn based player experience that still includes allot of interaction with the other players. Something Dice throne does especially well is keeping the interactions between players frequent and high stakes despite its turn based playstyle there is very little sitting and waiting in this game.
Dice Throne also has an extensive list of 24 different heroes that all have varying abilities and style of play. This variation allows players to pick up different heroes which adds an extra layer of replay-ability to the game. It also has a 2, 4, and 6 player game style which I was unable to play but having the same game pieces work in so many varied ways is definitely something I would like to see other games incorporate. The combination of simplicity and varied play options allows for the experience of Dice Throne to feel predominantly like a battle between you and the other players. Using your Heroes abilities is an engaging experience that feels fun to get better at as the game progresses. Additionally the buffs and debuffs you can gather and place on your opponents adds another thing for the player to keep in consideration.
Overall this game was super fun to pick up and used its dice mechanics in an interesting but approachable way. I would love to get a chance to play the game with larger group if any of y’all want to! Dice thrones way of balancing multiple systems while still keeping the language between players shared is something I would like to recreate in Idol Showdown. Also incorporating the way Dice Throne has a variety of character abilities and styles while using the same type of game pieces and resources is an aspect of Idol Showdown I would also like to refine.
Anyways yall should play it (i liked playing Samurai),, hope you all have a great 4th week! andddd yea! drink sum water ( •̀ ω •́ )✧
