Dixit is a fascinating and imaginative board game that delights players with its whimsical artwork and compelling story. The rules are straightforward. My partners and I started playing and got good at this game within ten minutes. To review this game, I think I need to start with its art design. The pictures on the cards that Dixit uses are a kind of fantasy and abstract style because of its special gameplay process. It requires the player to describe and guess which card is the correct one. Obviously, a realistic style won’t work with it. Actually, this kind of fantasy and abstract art creates many possible and potential play experiences for players. Theoretically, Dixit can be played as many times that players want. It has huge replay abilities for players.

It’s hard to describe the creativity that those cards could present. Here is an example.

Dixit Card

Second, I want to address the importance of the reward and punishment system in Dixist. Okay, during the game process now we need players to guess which card the host represents. If all players pick the correct one(host’s card), the host will gain points. However, actually, it’s unfair to other players if everything gets correct because the host could explain the card that he pick very clearly. So, there is competition between the players. Yes, this game is a competitive game. Other players also can pick one card that matches the host description. Here are the rewards mechanics, if someone selects your card, not the host’s. You will gain points for letting him make the bad decision.

The mechanics separate into three important parts. First, as a player, you have to choose which one is the host’s card by guessing. It’s not simply guessing, it’s a complicated process and consideration. You have to analyze the information that is received from the host, then gather the information of all cards that you can see. After many big-brain thinkings, try yourself picking the correct one. The correct decision will reward you points, otherwise, you won’t the points. Second, you have to pick one card from your hands that can let other players make the wrong decision. If other players choose your cards you can get the rewards from them. This is very tricky. It helps a lot to win this game. Second, as the host, you have to describe the card you choose as very blurry because of the punishment. Either everyone or no one pick the right card won’t let you get points. So the host, your goal is to let some players choose the right card. This brings a lot of possibilities, the player and the host are both collaborators as well as competitors. At the same time, the relationship between players, they are also competitors.

I would recommend my friends to play this game. Easy to play is one of the reasons. More likely, it has strong interactions among players. I play King of Tokyo before this game. And my all mates like this game more than King of Tokyo. The interaction of players in Dixit is different from other games. In most of the turn games the player just focuses on his turn first, he can do fewer things when it’s the other player’s turn. But in Dixit, the interaction between players appears synchronously. It let the players feel entertained continuously.
